Private MRI Referrals & Clinical Review in Bath

As part of our comprehensive diagnostic process at The London Road Clinic, we may occasionally need to refer you for a private MRI scan. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves. Consequently, it creates highly detailed images of the body’s internal structures. This includes bones, muscles, cartilage, and soft tissues.

In this guide, we will explore why our osteopaths might arrange a scan. Furthermore, we will explain how the referral process works and what patients can expect.

Why Would an Osteopath Arrange an MRI Scan?

Our osteopaths may refer you for a scan if we suspect a complex underlying condition. Sometimes, we simply need more detailed information to accurately diagnose your pain. For instance, this often includes structural spinal issues such as lumbar disc herniations, nerve root compression (sciatica), or radiculopathy. These specific conditions cannot always be fully detected through a standard physical examination.

Moreover, an MRI scan provides invaluable information about the exact extent of tissue damage. Therefore, it helps us safely develop a highly targeted and effective physical treatment plan.

How Does the Private MRI Process Work?

An MRI scan typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. Above all, it is a completely painless and non-invasive procedure. During the scan, you will be asked to lie still on a comfortable table that slides into the MRI machine. Following this, the machine generates a magnetic field to capture the diagnostic images.

The machine will make a loud knocking noise during the procedure. However, you will be given earplugs or headphones to block out the sound. Occasionally, some patients may be given a contrast dye. This is injected into a vein in the arm to help enhance the clarity of the images.

What Can Patients Expect After the Scan?

After the scan is complete, you can usually return to your normal daily activities right away. A consultant radiologist will then carefully review the structural images. Once finished, they will send a detailed clinical report directly to our osteopath. If agreed, we can also forward this report to your GP.

Finally, our osteopath will review the scan results with you in the clinic. We will clearly explain any findings and discuss the implications for your ongoing rehabilitation. In summary, our referral service provides a fast, safe, and accurate way to diagnose complex musculoskeletal conditions.
